Should I use a 12V or 24V Solar System for my RV?

When it comes to running appliances directly from batteries in an RV, a 12V solar system is recommended. Safety-wise, 12V is generally safer for DC circuits compared to 24V. Most RV appliances operate on 12-volt systems, making 12V the most compatible option for RVs. Therefore, using a 24-volt solar system might be unnecessary or even counterproductive.

What kind of batteries do RV solar systems use?

(Every RV solar system is essentially an RV solar battery charger.) We installed a much larger battery bank, 8 Battle Born 12V 100Ah GC2 Lithium-ion batteries. Our first RV solar system was built with a Tesla Model S car battery at its heart.

Should I wire my solar panels in a 24 volt setup?

We wired them in a 24-Volt configuration because with the amount of solar we would be installing, we needed a higher voltage system to handle the current. With larger systems (above 2500 watts), we always recommend building at least a 24-volt setup and possibly even a 48-volt.

What is the difference between 12 Volt vs 24 volt solar panels?

12 volt vs 24 volt is not dictated by your panels but rather by the battery bank. Voltage losses from solar panels is not a consideration as long as your wire is sized properly. What voltage to choose for your battery bank is going to depend on the loads going in and out of it.
