Newcastle-headquartered energy storage company Allegro Energy has unveiled a breakthrough in long-duration energy storage (LDES) with Australia’s first microemulsion flow battery.
Is battery storage the key to Australia's energy transition?
Origin Energy, which holds a 5% equity stake in Allegro Energy, said on LinkedIn that battery storage – including LDES – will be critical to Australia’s energy transition. Through its partnership with Allegro Energy, Origin plans to pilot the technology at Eraring before considering broader deployment, the company stated.
How is electricity stored in Australia?
This means a more reliable and constant supply of energy on and off-grid. Currently storage of electrical energy in Australia consists of a small number of pumped hydroelectric facilities and grid-scale batteries, and a diversity of battery storage systems at small scale, used mainly for backup.
How much battery capacity will Queensland have in 2024?
Total operational capacity now sits at 1.96 GW—an almost eight-fold increase from 2020. So far in 2024, 591 MW of new battery capacity has begun trading in the NEM - just behind the 610 MW deployed in 2023. Half of this has come in Queensland, tripling battery energy storage capacity in the state.
How much hydro storage is available in QLD?
QLD currently has only a nominal 6.4 GWh pumped hydro storage currently available for emergency use if the upper pondage storages are fully refilled. Another challenge unique to Australia is the NEM's longest radial transmission network of about 5000 km from QLD to SA.
Who owns Australia's largest battery system?
This includes Australia’s largest system, the 300 MW Victorian Big Battery, and two other batteries. Altogether Neoen owns 670 MW of commercially operational battery capacity—a third of NEM-wide battery capacity.
