Copenhagen Island Energy Storage Project

The artificial island, made of submersible concrete boxes, is to be built in the Danish part of the North Sea, around 100 kilometres from land. The island is to be established by 2030, at the latest, and connect 3 GW of offshore wind. 50Hertz and Energinet have joined forces to fully harvest the offshore wind potential held in the Baltic Sea, power the green transition in Germany and Denmark, and spearhead a new idea for connecting offshore wind farms across borders: the Bornholm Energy Island (BEI) project.

What is Copenhagen Energy Islands?

Copenhagen Energy Islands is currently developing a portfolio of around 10 energy island projects around the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and South-East Asia. Energy islands are large-scale offshore energy hubs, which will enable the massive scaling required for the next generation of offshore wind deployment globally.

What is Copenhagen Energy Islands (CEI)?

Copenhagen Energy Islands (CEI) is a company dedicated to early-stage development of energy island projects globally Energy islands are large-scale offshore energy hubs which will enable the massive scaling required for the next generation of offshore wind deployment globally.

Who is preparing a bid for the energy island in Denmark?

On November 30 Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Investors in the Vindø Consortium, Andel, Pension Denmark and PFA, announced the selection of Njord Group to jointly develop and prepare a bid for the Energy Island in the Danish North Sea.

How will a Danish island benefit from green electricity?

The island will help enable the electrification of Danish society and allow the electricity consumption of Danish households and companies to be covered by green electricity. Initially, the island will be able to accommodate 3 GW of offshore wind. Over time, the island will connect up to 10 GW.

Will Denmark build a 3 GW offshore wind energy island in 2022?

On 6 December 2021, the Government of Denmark published the Budget Agreement for 2022. Under this, the Danish government has approved the creation of a 3 GW offshore wind energy island located 80 km from the shore of Jutland. It could be later expanded to a capacity of 10 GW at a later stage, for a total investment of DKK 210 billion (€28 billion).
