We incorporate two distinct system options: a battery and a bulk storage technology. We discuss two scenarios featuring renewable generators: wind power and solar PV. This paper addresses an energy system design problem for an island system that relies on renewable sources such as wind or solar PV. Can a battery energy storage system enhance an isolated island microgrid?

This paper presents the frequency enhancement of an isolated island microgrid by a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a frequency sensor controller (FSC). We selected the Chimei Island microgrid for our study. The total installation capacity of solar photovoltaic (SPV) plants is 410 kWp with over 50% instantaneous penetration level.

Energy storage is a technical solution for decoupling electricity supply and demand, providing flexibility without compromise the overall system (Alves et al. 2019). By combining renewable energy and storage systems into hybrid energy approaches, it is possible to replace fossil electricity generation by approximately 100%.

We selected the Chimei Island microgrid for our study. The total installation capacity of solar photovoltaic (SPV) plants is 410 kWp with over 50% instantaneous penetration level. A BESS with the proposed FSC was installed to alleviate the impact of SPV power output variation on the microgrid.

How many battery banks does the island need?

According to the records for January 2019, this island power peak was 7299 kW (EDA 2019). Thus, taking into account the expressions 1 and 2, it is determined that this island needs, at least, 169 battery banks. According to the most recent data, it is known that the annual energy production in 2018 was 46,315.50 MWh (EDA 2019).

Each island has an independent electrical system classified as an isolated micro-system, given its size and location. The aim of this paper is to analyse the best set of technologies to have nine sustainable hybrid systems.
