What is a solar cycle?
A solar cycle is a period of about 11 years in which fluctuations in the number and size of sunspots and solar prominences are repeated. Sunspot groups have a magnetic field with a north and a south pole, and in each 11-year rise and fall, the same polarity leads in a given hemisphere while the opposite polarity leads in the other.
How does the solar cycle work?
The solar cycle is driven by the sun's magnetic field, according to NASA Space Place. Every 11 years or so, the sun's magnetic field flips so north becomes south and south becomes north. Changes in the sun's magnetic field affect the amount of activity on the solar surface.
How is a solar cycle predicted?
The predicted progression for the current solar cycle (Cycle 25) is given by the magenta line, with associated uncertainties shown by the shaded regions. This prediction is based on a nonlinear curve fit to the observed monthly values for the sunspot number and F10.7 Radio Flux and is updated every month as more observations become available.
How long does a solar cycle last?
However, scientists have identified that the last two years on the Sun have been part of this active phase of the solar cycle, due to the consistently high number of sunspots during this period. Scientists anticipate that the maximum phase will last another year or so before the Sun enters the declining phase, which leads back to solar minimum.
How many solar cycles are there?
Solar cycles have been tracked by astronomers since Galileo first observed sunspots in the 1600s. Each solar cycle is different — some cycles peak for larger and shorter amounts of time, and others have smaller peaks that last longer. Sunspot number over the previous 24 solar cycles.
What is Solar Cycle 25?
Solar cycle 25 is a period of about 11 years in which fluctuations in the number and size of sunspots and solar prominences are repeated. It began in 2019 and will reach maximum in 2025, but that maximum is predicted to be weak, like that of solar cycle 24.
