Are hydrophobic anti-soiling coatings suitable for photovoltaic modules?
Abstract: Soiling of photovoltaic modules is a serious problem that significantly reduces power output. The requirements for a hydrophobic anti-soiling coating are discussed and the development of a transparent hydrophobic coating with good durability is described.
Can superhydrophobic coatings be used on glass surfaces and photovoltaic cells?
This study presents a novel approach to fabricate self-cleaning, superhydrophobic coatings on glass surfaces and photovoltaic cells. Using a cost-effective spray-coating technique, superhydrophobic glass surfaces were developed incorporating modified SiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs), synthesized via a simple sol–gel method.
Can PFPE chains improve the hydrophobicity of glass substrates?
Wear-resistant self-cleaning silicon sol coating was developed. Perfluorinated polyether (PFPE) chains improved the hydrophobicity of the surfaces. The effect of KH550 and KH560 with different volume ratios on the coating properties was investigated. Hydrophobic coating was developed on glass substrates by spray-coating.
Does PFOS affect hydrophobic glass surfaces?
The results suggest that while PFOS decreases the sliding angle, it also lowers the contact angle, making it less effective for creating hydrophobic glass surfaces when used alone. Sample 3, modified with silica nanoparticles, demonstrates notably promising hydrophobic properties.
Can superhydrophobic glass surfaces prevent biofouling and corrosion?
Lastly, in marine environments, the coatings can prevent biofouling and corrosion on glass surfaces, reducing maintenance. The study successfully developed superhydrophobic glass surfaces using SiO 2, PFOS, and PDMS modifiers, applied through a simple spray coating technique.
Why do solar PV modules have a deterioration of optical properties?
In the outdoor surroundings, accumulated dust and condensated fogs on PV modules tends to scatter or reflect the incidence light, deteriorating the optical properties [40, 41]. Many researches have been proposed to introduce self-cleaning and anti-fogging properties to the module surface [42, 43].
