A battery energy storage system (BESS) is an electrochemical device that charges from the grid or a power plant and then discharges that energy to provide electricity or other grid services when needed.
How long does a battery storage system last?
For instance, a battery with 1 MW of power capacity and 4 MWh of usable energy capacity can provide power for four hours. The cycle life/lifetime of a battery storage system determines how long it can provide regular charging and discharging before failure or significant degradation.

Battery storage is a technology that enables power system operators and utilities to store energy for later use.
How much did battery storage cost in the past?
A decade ago, the price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of lithium-ion battery storage was around $1,200. For a long time, the cost of battery storage of renewable energy was considered prohibitive. An alternative to storing energy is to store it electrochemically in batteries.

When manufacturers or installers talk about battery capacity (or energy capacity), they usually talk about one of two metrics a battery is rated on: total capacity and usable capacity. We'll get into why those are different further down. For the time being, it's all just "capacity."
Does battery capacity matter?
If physical space is an issue for you, that's when battery capacities in a single product will be more important. For homes with large electric bills, you'll almost always have to install a stacked battery system to store enough energy.
