The requirement that lithium ion batteries be used in certain conditions, for example as a battery, must have the same voltage as a lithium ion battery if connected in series. If this condition is not met, security and battery life are at stake. Battery Management System (BMS) comes as a solution to this problem.
What is a lithium-ion battery monitoring system?
It specifies which lithium-ion technology is used for monitoring control signals such as the high voltage per cell, the start voltage balancing, the low voltage shutdown, and the maximum temperature of battery cells pack. The proposed system allows performing management practices in controlled charging and discharging of batteries.

The main characteristic of BMS is the balance at the charge and discharge process of the battery pack. This increases the lifetime of the batteries and optimizes their performance .
What is the difference between a digital BMS and an analog BMS?
completely analogic BMS does not provide the user with the status of the battery pack and the cells, or the remaining capacity of these. However, in a digital BMS, the user can get this information and monitors the charge and the discharge of the battery pack.
How many ICs are in a BMS?
The main structure of a complete BMS for low or medium voltages is commonly made up of three ICs: an analog front-end (AFE), a microcontroller (MCU), and a fuel gauge (see Figure 1). The fuel gauge can be a standalone IC, or it can be embedded in the MCU.
Why does the BMS have a hysteresis voltage?
As the integrated monitoring circuit has a hysteresis voltage of 2.2 V , the intermittent operation of the batteries is prevented. As a protective measure, and in order to limit the current from the cells that flows by the discharge phase to the output, the BMS includes current monitoring bars.
