Abu Dhabi government officials last week inaugurated the 2 GW Dhafra Solar Photovoltaic Independent Power Project, located roughly 35 kilometers from United Arab Emirates’ capital. The plant consists of four million bifacial solar panels and is claimed to be the world’s largest single-site solar power plant.
How much solar power does the United Arab Emirates have?
United Arab Emirates had 2.9 GW of installed solar capacity at the end of last year, according to estimates published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). It is expected the Dhafra Solar Photovoltaic Independent Power Project will bring the country’s total well over 3 GW.
Who owns Abu Dhabi national energy company (TAQA)?
Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) owns 60% of the company, Marubeni Corporation has 20% and Jinko Solar has 20%. TAQA is a global energy company with ownership of 23 GW of power generation capacity, with strong development, operation and maintenance capabilities.
How many bifacial solar panels are there?
The project comprises four million bifacial solar panels spread over 20 kilometers of arid desert. It is expected to supply enough power for roughly 200,000 homes. The energy is being procured through EWEC, according to a 30-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
Why is Noor Abu Dhabi a good solar project?
"The good thing about this design is that it distributes the production more evenly throughout the day." The Noor Abu Dhabi IPP is currently the largest single-site solar project in the world, with 1.2 GW of capacity. Its construction started in May 2017, undertaken by EPC contractor Sterling and Wilson.
