In this Review, we survey the key changes related to materials and industrial processing of silicon PV components. At the wafer level, a strong reduction in polysilicon cost and the general implementation of diamond wire sawing has reduced the cost of monocrystalline wafers.
What is a crystalline silicon PV cell?
The crystalline silicon PV cell is one of many silicon-based semiconductor devices. The PV cell is essentially a diode with a semiconductor structure (Figure 1), and in the early years of solar cell production, many technologies for crystalline silicon cells were proposed on the basis of silicon semiconductor devices.
Is silicon-on-insulator technology useful for PV cells?
Jeong et al. 8 achieved a remarkable efficiency of 13.7% for a cell based on a nano-textured 10 μm mono-crystalline silicon absorber. However, silicon-on-insulator technology was used for this demonstration, which is not relevant for PV due to the high price of the wafers.
