As a battery pack designer it is important to understand the cell in detail so that you can interface with it optimally. It is interesting to look at the Function of the Cell Can or Enclosure and to think about the relationship between the Mechanical, Electrical and Thermal design.

What are the components of a battery pack?

Cells: The basic building blocks of a battery pack. Lithium-ion cells come in various shapes (cylindrical, prismatic, pouch) and chemistries (e.g., NMC, LFP). Modules: Groups of cells assembled together in a specific configuration (series, parallel, or a combination) to achieve the desired voltage and capacity.

How many cells are in a battery pack?

A battery pack may have one or more cells, even thousands of battery cells. If it has multiple cells these will be connected together in series and parallel.

How a battery pack works?

This group of cells will need electrical busbars as interconnects, a mechanical system to hold all of the cells together, a monitoring and control system and maybe a cooling system to manage heat output from the cells. In every aspect of the operation of the battery pack it’s capability will be limited by the weakest cell.
